Type: Humanitarian & Community Development ,
This community nutrition awareness project in the Andes has been set up because healthy food = healthy kids and in Bolivia malnutrition levels are high in impoverished communities. A balanced diet is essential for young children and by volunteering, you can bring your skills and knowledge to the project. You can share your knowledge with the local community, especially the Tias who prepare lunches for the children at the Childcare Centre. You can help prepare materials which you can pass on to the local ladies when you leave to ensure that your good work continues.
At this community-based day care centre, parents pay a small fee for their children aged 6 months to 4 years to be cared for where their educational and nutritional needs are met. The children receive breakfast, lunch, 2 snacks and an afternoon drink. For many this is their only food intake and after weekends where the children have stayed with parents and food is limited, the difference is obvious. Often, poor parents struggle to provide a balanced diet and can only focus on quantity rather than quality of the meals.
A dedicated cook tries to provide balanced nutritious snacks and meals for the children every day. But funding only exists for 1 teacher for 16 children so your help will be much appreciated. Volunteers can work with the cook to develop new recipes, ideas and just general assistance.
Volunteer roles also include ongoing monitoring of the children’s weight on a monthly basis. Those children that are found to be undernourished and underweight receive free vitamins. Education regarding nutrition is an important aspect of this project as long-term change will only come through educating people about the important elements needed for a child to grow and develop.
All projects are self-funded, but include accommodation, food, airport transfer and training. Click to apply and a project advisor will be in touch to discuss price and availability.
