Costa Rica - Volunteer Working in an Orphanage

Print this page

Country: Costa Rica,
Type: Humanitarian & Community Development , Teaching & Education, Working with children,

As a participant on this project you will be working in small Children’s Homes and Orphanages in and around the town of San Ramon.

These homes are sponsored by the local community and with government aid.  The homes are run by staff called “Tias” (aunties) who look after the children and manage their daily routine. The children also have access to a psychologist who visits twice a week and a tutor who attends daily.

In a lot of cases, the children are not permanent residence of these homes as not all of them are orphans in the true sense. Some children may have been abused by their parents or family members. In these instances the Social Welfare system has removed the children from their homes on a temporary basis while working with the parents to improve conditions.

It will be your role as a volunteer on this project to support the staff by engaging the children in educational and recreational activities.

Volunteers are encouraged to gear their activities towards education and using English as well as helping the children with homework and any other fun and useful activities.
