Country: New Zealand,
Type: Environment & Wildlife Conservation,
Volunteer with Kaya Responsible Travel in New Zealand's North or South Island, protecting the Ecosystem and preserving it's natural beauty. New Zealand has a pretty unique environment and nowhere is this more visible than in its landscape, which includes glaciers, fjords, plains, volcanic plateaus and miles of coastline.
Volunteer in New Zealand on our projects on the North island, including helping to boost native biodiversity by providing additional habitat for native birds and restoring the rare peat lakes around Waikato.
The North Island has plenty of rivers, volcanic regions, secluded spectacular beaches as well as tall forests, rainforests and rural landscapes. Projects take place in and around Auckland, that lies between two picturesque harbours, surrounded by sandy beaches and beautiful islands. The city itself has plenty of parks to explore in free time, plus plenty of cafes and shops. Projects also take place across the North Island in and around Hamilton, the heart of ‘Lord of the Rings’ film country.
On the less populated South Island habitat restoration is still key. When you volunteer in New Zealand be part of the work taking place to replant depleted tree species and seed collection.
The South Island is unfortunately suffering from species and habitat loss and environmental degradation, with deforestation being the primary cause. A string of natural diasters, from earthquakes, such as the one in Christchurch in June 2011, to volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and cyclones has also created the need for conservation efforts. People in New Zealand highly value their natural environment and although there are professionals in the field, volunteers play a huge role in responding to environmental challenges.
All projects are self-funded, but include accommodation, food, airport transfer and training. Click to apply and a project advisor will be in touch to discuss price and availability.
