Type: Humanitarian & Community Development , Teaching & Education, Working with children,
As a participant on this project, you will be working with children in the rural orphanages around Koforidua.
In Ghana there are two types of orphanages: those funded by the government, and those that are privately-owned. The government-funded orphanages tend to be urban-based, large, and institutional, while the privately-operated orphanages tend to be smaller and run by a variety of different organizations.
These smaller orphanages tend to have fewer resources, and are funded by donations from local groups, churches, and individuals. Volunteers are placed in one of three small orphanages, located on the outskirts of Koforidua. You will be in a position to show affection, encouragement and support to these orphans.
One of the orphanages also has a school on site, so you will also be expected to teach basic English, mathematics, reading, and general life skills.
The children in these smaller orphanages are lucky, because unlike many orphans in Ghana, they have a room and board, and can go to school. The orphanages have limited resources, so there is not so much time for staff to give each child the amount of time, attention and care a child needs.
