Type: Humanitarian & Community Development ,
Volunteers are needed in Swaziland to help to build homes for needy families using local building materials and techniques. Work with local builders in one of Africa's last remaining Monarchies where HIV and AIDS is decimating rural communities, leaving many orphaned children with inadequate shelters. You will be in the communities, building classrooms and houses for orphaned and vulnerable children aswell as fixing existing households and painting. You may also help to start up gardens in the homesteads and develop existing ones.
The building project aims to assist these vulnerable children through building basic shelters, gardens, water systems and other physical structures needed at households and care centres. At the same time you will be transferring skills such as teamwork and determination, providing basic accommodation and will be helping to give communities encouragement and motivation to improve the quality of life. The project uses locally sourced building materials where possible and local methods. We construct mud bricks using a locally made compressor and use other local materials wherever possible.
You will use local techniques of making mud bricks, then lay foundations, complete plastering, flooring, windows, doors and roofing under the supervision and direction of a local builder. Once completed, you will then have the opportunity to help decorate the structure as the families desire. This is also a great chance to meet local community members and provide support to needy families and children while working on the building.
The project is located in the Ezulwini valley of central Swaziland. This is the cultural heart of Swaziland and is where most of the tourist activities are based and is also where the Royal Palace, houses of parliament, national sports stadium and national museum are located. The capital town Mbabane is a 15 minute drive away and is definitley worth a visit.
All projects are self-funded, but include accommodation, food, airport transfer and training. Click to apply and a project advisor will be in touch to discuss price and availability.
