Country: Costa Rica,
Type: Environment & Wildlife Conservation,
Volunteer abroad on our Sea Turtle conservation projects in Costa Rica. These projects have been created with the purpose of protecting the female sea turtles, their nests and hatchlings laid on beaches along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica. There is always a lot to get involved in, regardless of location. Volunteer roles are a variety of different protection and maintenance activities. These may include beach patrolling at night; collecting eggs; trail and camp maintenance or research and data collection.
Turtles in the wild are under threat for poaching and introductio of new natural predators. The projects aims to proect them, with a man-made shelter called a "vivero'. Refuges are also established to protect the nesting sites of the species: Pacific Olive Ridley, the Leatherback, Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles.
Research is also a big part of the conservation effort, because the information is used to improve the next seasons activities and techniques. The information is shared with the community, local and regional authorities with the goal of increasing awareness about conservation. Turtles are a wonderful legacy from prehistoric times and the goal is to preserve the species and associated ecosystems.
Much of the volunteer work on this project is carried out at night, generally between the hours of 8pm and 4am. Volunteers also work in the day time as well but are given time off to rest between the different shifts. The work is great for outdoor and animal lovers, as you will be in regular contact with the turtles and must be comfortable with that. The hands-on work requires enthusiasm and a good energy.
A basic level of Spanish is also required. A one week intensive course in Spanish language classes can be arranged before you start on your project.
All projects are self-funded, but include accommodation, food, airport transfer and training. Click to apply and a project advisor will be in touch to discuss price and availability.
