A stated goal of the Chilean Ministry of Education is that Chile must become a fully bilingual country. English is taught in all Chilean schools from the first to the twelfth grades. Volunteer to teach English in Chile and you will work closely with Chilean teachers. Volunteer teaching placements in Chile are based in La Serena's kindergarten, primary and secondary level.

When you teach English in Chile you will focus your time on pronunciation, verbal exercises, correct grammar and spelling. You will work with the local teacher and create a syllabus. TEFL certificate is not required, however volunteers need to be proficient in Spanish. This program can also be combined with the Language and Cultural Immersion program.

  • Project length: From 2 weeks to 12 weeks
  • Project dates: March to December. Choose any date to arrive.

  • Accommodation: Local host family
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Program Schedule

  • Program starts and ends in La Serena
  • Airport meet and greet in La Serena. Afternoon city tour and orientation
  • Monday to Friday volunteering. 35-40 hours per week
  • Weekends free to sightseeing
  • Typical shift work can be: 800-300pm with a break for lunch
  • Support: Local ABV Director support 24/7 during placement
  • Departure: ABV Staff Escorted Airport Transfer

Not included:

    This program is located in the beach community of La Boquilla, located about 25-30 minutes from downtown Cartagena. Most of the people in this area are fisherman and neighborhood homes are quite primitive. This multi-functioning center supports over 300 children/youth on a daily basis where they come to study, play and eat. There are free lunches, kindergarten, primary school lessons, monthly health checks and a safe refuge for poor kids in the community. At this project the staff look to improve the lives of the children and work on the prevention of child trafficking into the sex trade.

    There are currently 25 children residing at the orphanage. The children range from 5yrs-15 years old. Our volunteers support the staff in terms of their daily routines, and also offer outside input for activities and recreational ideas. During the school term volunteer will help with the children's breakfast, and escorting them to school. Afternoon work needs are farming, gardening, animal care, cooking, laundry, cleaning. Afternoon activities with the children including reading, helping with homework, arts and crafts, playing in the ball fields, and being present for the children.

    Most national parks offer on-site shared volunteer accommodations. These living conditions are basic, but clean and comfortable. Running water is available and communal washrooms. This is a rustic, adventure location and require people about o adapt to the basic conditions. A two week minimum program is required to a maximum of 6 weeks.

As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; including feeding and clothing, teaching basic English.     The orphanage is home to about 20 children. Most of these children are rescued from the streets of Nairobi, or have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. The children are provided a comfortable home, food and education by the orphanage director and his dedicated full time staff. The orphanage is a simple 3-4 building structure located in an agricultural area surrounded by green fertile land. Meals are provided by a local cook. The children are provided education and also taught how to farm; there are acres of banana, avocado, mango, and coffee trees.

    Support a local children's center, called a crèche, which provides a safe haven to 30-40 children daily. Some are orphans fostered in the community, others are from poor families and can't attend school yet. At the center they give these children a safe place and the love and care that they need. Volunteers add support to the local staff with individual attention to the kids, supervise play time, support lunch services, reinforce English speaking with lessons and reading/games and help with homework. Afternoon homework guidance and after school project support needed as well.

    Volunteer in one of two local orphanages in the Wakiso district, located outside of the city of Kampala. The village orphanage and school not only provide a home and safe haven this is where the children have classes. Most of these children have lost parents to HIV/Aids. The orphanage strives to provide a better future for some of the most vulnerable children in Uganda. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; getting them ready for school, brushing teeth.

    In La Serena volunteers support a large orphanage/children's center. The center offers nursery and kindergarten services to about 140 underage children, some of which are orphans and live at the center full time. There are over 40 babies and toddlers, and the rest between 2-4 years old. One of the main characteristic of this project is the incorporation of the families and the community to the educational work.     Volunteer Abroad Peru Cusco Orphanage Program

    As a volunteer in our orphanage assistance project you spend your days interacting with the children, reading books, playing soccer and other games, helping with the vocational training like hand crafting or baking. One of our orphanage partner projects support children 0-5yrs old. Here volunteers change diapers, bottle feed babies, help with activities and nap time also. Volunteering with children, of any age, can be a tiring and challenging experience - but very rewarding!
