Type: Environment & Wildlife Conservation,
Volunteer in Indonesia and help care for orangutans, sun bears, monkeys, and a wide range of birds at this wildlife rescue centre. The project is located on the island of Sulawesi which is a well known hub for animal trafficking from Java, Sumatra, and Borneo. The authorities cannot raid or confiscate live animal shipments without a rescue facility for them to go to, therefore this centre is invaluable in combating the illegal wildlife trade and providing rescued animals with a place to receive care and support, eventually to be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.
The main objective of the centre is for the animals and birds to be released back into the wild. In order to do this successfully feeding patterns must be controlled and timed in a way they would be in their natural environments. Part of the volunteer job is to research how the species in question would usually find their food in the wild, and coming up with creative ways to recreate this.
To do this for every species at the centre however takes time, and with over 200 animals and birds at the centre and only a handful of local staff to care for them, volunteer help is essential to ensure that the animals are taken care of.
Volunteers must have a love for animals, but full training is given, therefore no specific qualifications are required. For those with vetinary, forestry, agriculture or fundraising backgrounds, your talents are much needed. Volunteers will spend a significant amount of time providing fresh drinking water to the animals, cleaning their enclosures and carrying out enrichments for all of the animals. Depending upon what is needed at the time, there will also be work in connection with building/upgrading enclosures.
Sulawesi is a beautiful island, offering plenty to do. Work ends at 4pm, and volunteers tend to head down the beach for a snorkel or swim.
All projects are self-funded, but include accommodation, food, airport transfer and training. Click to apply and a project advisor will be in touch to discuss price and availability.
