Type: Medical & Health Care,
Due to the geographical characteristics of Nepal, remote villages and overpopulated cities, the government is still struggling to provide adequate health services for the poorer communities. Hundreds of thousands of Nepalese people are estimated to suffer unnecessarily due to a lack of basic health care. Working at a hospital or clinic is an opportunity to provide a assist with basic tasks and to learn firsthand about basic healthcare in a developing country. The hospital covers a range of services including x-ray, laboratory, in-patient wards, OBGYN, dental, eye-care, pre/post op care.
All aspects of the health-care system in Nepal are typically under-funded and under-staffed and cannot meet the needs of everyone who receives care there. Volunteers with any sort of medical or health-care backgrounds are highly valuable as help is needed in all aspects of operating a hospital.
Your level of involvement in these areas will depend upon your experience and background.
• For unqualified volunteers with less experience your role will be observational than hands-on, as would be the case in many countries. Nonetheless, the placement still offers a fantastic insight into how the health care system in a Third World country works, and you will learn a great deal.
• Medical interns may get the chance to travel with doctors to rural areas to help with local people. If you are a 3rd or 4th year student you may be allowed to work directly with patients. You will also be given lectures by local doctors and learn about healthcare in Nepal. You must be willing to learn and help where needed in the clinic as part of a team.
You will be required to submit a full CV/resume upon application.
You will be located in and around the capital Kathmandu, which has plenty to offer. There is a vast variety of local food and shopping in the labyrinth of small restaurants and shops. Kathmandu is a complete mix of modern and ancient; with its software houses, tuk-tuk taxis buzzing around, cows roaming the streets and mobile phones ringing.
