Please note that whilst medical placements on Naifaru are available year round, the local hospital at Naifaru may not always be busy enough, depending on what medical volunteers wish to specialise in, to provide a substantial amount of experience. In such cases we are able, with permission of the Ministry of Health, to send medical volunteers to any hospital in the Maldives for a placement, depending on your needs.

Volunteer as a medical volunteer in The Maldives. Great for nursing and medical students.

Medical Placement (Minimum stay 3 weeks)
The Medical Placement Programme is an opportunity for young medical students to join the staff of a small hospital, where they are able to shadow the hospital's medical staff in the everyday treatment of the island's patients. The hospital is situated on Naifaru Island which has a population of over 5000 people. Naifaru is also the capital of the Lhivayani Atoll, meaning that the hospital provides services for a total of 11,000 people across the atoll. Due to the relatively small patient-base of the hospital, medical volunteers will have a chance to assist in every department. Currently the hospital has the following specialists: Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Anaesthetists, General Practitioners, Dentists, Paediatricians (planned).

Aside from giving volunteers the opportunity to explore a range of medical issues, as a medical volunteer, you will also be given the opportunity to go on house calls which is a great way to experience the local culture. Whilst you are on the programme you will be housed in a volunteer house which has all the modern amenities you could wish for. The volunteer house is situated less than 5 minutes from the hospital, and as such there is an opportunity for you to be on call.

Medical and healthcare volunteers will have the chance to work across a wide demographic rangeNursing Placements and Midwife Positions (Minimum stay 3 weeks)
The hospital on the island of Naifaru is the main hospital for the Lhivayani atoll and caters to a population of roughly 11,000 people. Being a relatively small hospital, you will be given a unique opportunity to work in-depth with patients, more so than you would in larger hospital, as the staff-to-patient ratio is much higher in a smaller hospital.

As a volunteer on the nursing programme, you will be given extensive duties which include; Direct care of patients, Dressing of wounds, Hygiene, Administering medicine, Taking blood samples & cannulation. Whether you are an experienced nurse, or currently doing your studies; volunteering at Naifaru hospital is bound to give you new and interesting perspectives on your profession. You will gain experience which will be different to that of larger hospitals. This is true for the way the hospital is run as well as the fact that the tropical setting will allow you to become familiar with tropical medicine in a low-risk area.

Aside from being able to give much more in-depth care you will also be able to experience duties which fall into different departments. At the moment the hospital has the following specialists: Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Anaesthetists, General Practitioners, Dentists, Paediatricians (planned).

If you join the project as a midwife or midwife student you will also be able to work closely with antenatal care. At the hospital you are sure to find this to be a different experience from what you are used to. Working with antenatal care in the community is infused with cultural considerations which offers a unique insight into the 'real' Maldives. Midwife volunteers will also be given the opportunity to go on home visits, giving further insight into the Maldivian culture by taking you 'behind the scenes' of local family life.
