Matt Astill

Matt Astill tells of his experience volunteering in Honduras with Global Vision and how that changed his life

I was introduced to the team leaders at GVI through a mutual friend and their enthusiasm was infectious. The project involved learning to dive for those not already qualified (that included my self) in order to study the affects of bleaching on the coral reef system around the island of Roatan, Honduras. The expedition lasted three months and it was to dramatically change my life.

Learning to dive quickly turned from an exciting novelty to a passion. Coupled with the serious work of learning to identify corals and fish correctly in order top carry out the surveys I soon realised what it was I wanted to do with my life. Since my return from Roatan I worked my way up the diving ladder and I now hold a PADI Divemaster qualification and I am an Assistant instructor for the British Sub-Aqua Club. I have also enrolled at Portsmouth University to study a BSc in marine Environmental Science.

To those considering project work with Global Vision I would say “go for it” wherever it may be. It may not be the life changing experience I had but it will open your eyes to the world around you, and the people you meet and share these experiences with will become friends for life.
