1. Teens Marine Conservation Programme, Maldives (Ages 15–17)

This is the big one. Our brand new dedicated teens programme takes a group of 15 to 17-year-olds to one of the most beautiful places on earth — the island of Naifaru in the Maldives — for two weeks of immersive marine conservation. Think snorkelling on pristine reefs, learning from marine biologists, and contributing to the protection of one of the most threatened ocean environments on the planet.

This is a fully supervised, teens-only conservation programme — not a mixed-age volunteer placement — designed specifically for younger participants.

The programme runs 14–27 August 2026 and is fully supervised by qualified, DBS-checked staff throughout. All parents and teens are connected in advance to coordinate flights into Malé, and the group travels together from there to the island. You’ll stay at a comfortable guesthouse on the island, with all meals, domestic flights, accommodation and marine activities included in the cost of £1,495 for the two weeks. 2. Dolphin Research Volunteer Project, Greece (Ages 16+)

Set in the beautiful fishing village of Vonitsa on the Ionian Sea, this project puts teen volunteers right at the heart of real dolphin research. Working alongside scientists, you’ll survey for Bottlenose Dolphins, Common Dolphins and the elusive Mediterranean Monk Seal from the water — in one of the best dolphin hotspots in Europe. Rated 4.9/5 by previous volunteers, with sightings almost guaranteed. A perfect fit for any teen with a passion for marine biology or a future in conservation science.

3. Dolphin & Whale Volunteer Research Project, Italy (Ages 16+)

For teens ready for a truly unforgettable adventure, this sailing-boat based research programme in the Western Mediterranean is hard to beat. You live and work aboard a research vessel in the waters between Italy and France, assisting scientists with cetacean surveys across some of the most biodiverse waters in Europe. You’ll survey for fin whales, sperm whales, striped dolphins and more — and spend evenings at marina stops along the Italian coast.

4. Dolphin & Whale Research Volunteer Project, Portugal (Ages 16+)

Based along the stunning Algarve coastline, this programme is your chance to support dolphin and whale conservation in the Atlantic waters off southern Portugal. Working with a dedicated research team, teen volunteers collect behavioural data, assist with photo-ID catalogues and contribute to long-running population studies. With the Algarve on your doorstep for days off, it’s conservation and adventure in equal measure.

5. Playa Tortuga Conservation Volunteer Project, Costa Rica (Ages 16+)

Deep in the tropical rainforest on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, this long-running programme tackles sea turtle conservation, crocodile research, mammal surveys and environmental education. Over the past decade, nest poaching rates have fallen by 87% thanks to the work of volunteers on this project — so the impact here is very, very real. Can 16 year olds volunteer abroad alone? Yes — most of our teen programmes are open to 16+ travelling independently, alongside adult volunteers in a structured, professionally run environment.

What is the youngest age you can volunteer abroad? Our youngest teen programme starts at 15, with our dedicated Maldives Teens Only programme open to 15–17 year olds.

Are teen volunteer programmes safe? Our dedicated Maldives Teens Only programme (ages 15–17) is fully supervised by qualified, DBS-checked staff throughout, with parents connected in advance and the group escorted together from Malé to the island. Our other programmes — Greece, Italy, Portugal, Grenada, Costa Rica and South Africa — are open to teens aged 16+ and operate alongside adult volunteers in a structured, professionally run environment.

Do I need experience to volunteer abroad as a teenager? No experience is needed for any of our teen programmes. All training is provided on arrival and our project staff support volunteers throughout their stay.
