Botswana Volunteer in Botswana

"I still can’t believe some activities I was fortunate to be a part of and experience from the community visits, the incredible game sightings, tracking animals, watching the sunset numerous times behind a magnificent baobab and listening to hyenas whoop and lions roar while I tried to fall asleep. Truly unforgettable."

Kim, South Africa

Botswana, characterised by deep red sunsets, hot Kalahari landscapes and lush delta, draws adventurers from across the globe with its sense of untouched beauty.  This is a country that entices everyone that visits.  One of the most stable and economically successful African countries, it is landlocked and bordered by Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia and is 70% Kalahari desert.  It also boasts the impressive Okavango Delta, and the largest salt pans in the world.  With the most beautiful sunsets and the clearest starry nights, this country makes both sundowners and stargazing surreal experiences.

As a volunteer in Botswana, you will find that the people are welcoming and friendly and a mix of cultures and traditions makes visiting a colourful experience.  The diversity of wildlife found on our Limpopo Lipadi Game Reserve volunteer programme is similar to that of reserves and national parks across the rest of Botswana and in its neighbouring countries.  There is a feeling of serenity that surrounds the wilderness in Botswana and it has the ability, particularly as you venture out of clusters of towns, to make you feel as if you are the only person on earth.

Geography and Climate

Botswana is a largely flat country with the harsh dryness of the Kalahari desert punctuated by the sanctuary of the lush Okavango Delta in the north-west and the impressive Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in the north-east.  Hot days remain relatively constant throughout the year, with the winter months bringing cooler nights.  The seasons are largely differentiated by the rain, where summer is wet and humid and winter is dry and clear.

History and Culture

Peace isn’t only found in the tranquil scenery in Botswana.  In fact, the 2018 Global Peace Index ranked it as the 29th most peaceful country in the world.  This means it’s ranked higher than many European countries.  There are many different cultures and traditions expanding across the area but, simultaneously, a wonderful sense of harmony amongst the people, the majority of whom speak English and Tswana.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

Like its neighbouring countries, Botswana boasts an impressive array of wildlife and diversity.  It is also home to a number of endangered species, like the wild African dog, of which it has the largest population and which you can research and monitor on our Limpopo Lipadi Game Reserve volunteer programme, along with leopards, elephants and lions.
