Care for animals & promote Animal Welfare in Arusha, Tanzania

The animal shelter was established by the two German founders in 2013 as a response to the great need for more adequate animal care & education of the population. Always there are 20-30 dogs, at least half of them puppies and a handful of cats. The shelter relies to 100 % on donations that's why volunteer work is so important here.

In the shelter you will be educating, walking, playing with & caring for the dogs & cats. Besides that you can participate in fundraising and marketing activities according to your interests and knowledge. If you like you will also get the chance to teach “Animal Welfare” in local schools. The shelter works together closely with the World Wide Veterinary Service and Mission Rabies and in irregular intervals vaccination as well as spay and neuter campaigns are carried out, in which every helping hand is useful.

MAWO was founded in 2009 as a response to the horrific animal treatments especially dogs and donkeys mainly in rural areas.

They are fighting for a different perception of animals within North Tanzania and the following five freedoms for animals:

1. Freedom from hunger & thirst
2. Freedom from discomfort
3. Freedom from pain, injury & diseases
4. Freedom from fear & stress
5. Freedom to express normal behaviour

You will be active in the fields of marketing/fundraising: designing brochures, writing newsletters, actively searching donors & apply for grants. You will support field activities i.g. dog & donkey clinics and you will provide education in schools.

  • Care for animals & promote Animal Welfare in Arusha, Tanzania

Animals are perceived differently in Tanzania, not as pets but rather they have to fulfil a use. Street dogs and cats are often in poor condition. Arusha has a big problem with street dogs, they multiply uncontrolled, lacking food, health and care. That why the Animal Shelter Mbwa wa Africa (takes care of dogs & cats) and the Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO, takes care of dogs, cats & donkeys) were founded.
