Coral Reef Conservation & Diving Project, Thailand

Join a marine and coral reef conservation project on Koh Phangan island in Thailand’s Samui archipelago. A great opportunity for students looking to gain diving and scientific research experience in a stunning tropical setting and kickstart a career in marine conservation.

Gain practical experience required to pursue a career in marine and reef conservation. All projects include a 2-week dive training at the beginning of your stay, which will give you the skills needed to work in marine conservation in tropical environments.

This project is located in the lower Gulf of Thailand, on the stunning tropical island of Koh Phangan, fringed by coral reefs and juvenile mangroves. Part of the Samui archipelago, with easy access to Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and to the Ang Thong and Chumphon National Marine Parks.

Volunteers will stay at the wildlife sanctuary and spend their time here with the on-site horses. Mornings will be spent helping with cleaning and feeding, training young and new horses, as well as taming and raising foals. Training will involve the use of Natural Horsemanship and Parelli tactics. These training strategies involve playful work from the ground as well as longer training rides in the bush with the more experienced horses.

Playa Tortuga Butterfly Garden Volunteering Project, Costa Rica
The objectives of the Butterfly Garden project is the investigation of native species of butterflies (Siproeta stelenes, Caligo memnon, Heraclides thoas, Dryas iulia) in the reserve and all aspects of their reproductive cycle and plant foods. Environmental education workshops will also take place, whereby members of the local community will visit the garden and volunteers will help to conduct educational tours and classes. Playa Tortuga Mammal Inventory Monitoring Project, Costa Rica
Conservation volunteers work within a non-profit biological research and education centre, using camera traps to monitor the diverse array of mammal species in Playa Tortuga. Within the Reserve, there are more than 11 species of mammals – the most common being raccoons, coatis, kinkajous, weasels, River Otters, Tayra and Monkeys. Capuchin Monkeys are easy to find into the Reserve forest, others such as Anteaters, Oposums, and Sloths are also common in the area but hard to observe. There is also evidence of an Ocelot (detected by trail cameras) in the Balso River.
