Ostional is an amazing project dedicated to the protection of sea turtles. Once a month, over the course of three nights, between 3,000 and 10,000 sea turtles arrive on the beach! Volunteers work on the National Wildlife Reserve and patrol the beach during the night to prevent illegal poaching, protect young sea turtles and carry out routine clean-ups.
The National Wildlife Reserve is located on the Nicoya peninsula in the province of Guanacaste and its main objective is the protection of sea turtle nests. Volunteers have a level of flexibility in their schedules and are given the option of working during the night, as many of the activities involved in sea turtle conservation take place at this time. Every volunteer is entitled to one day off per week (usually Sunday) for his/her own personal activities. A strong foundation in either English or Spanish is essential for these placements.
Please contact us regarding fees associated with this project. Placements are flexible and can be organized for a duration of 2 weeks to 3 months.
