Life at the edge of the mangroves is a lifestyle few get to experience and enjoy; volunteering at Honko will give you this unique opportunity, and a chance to make a real difference in this fragile ecosystem which many overlook. Honko's volunteer openings with our new Mangrove Fisheries Monitoring Project will give you an opportunity to play an integral role in collecting important fisheries data that will benefit the mangrove-dependent communities within Honko's project area in SW Madagascar. This data will help to inform the local mangrove management association on the current state of Ambondrolava’s mangrove fisheries and other factors that will influence the design of new sustainable management activities such as temporary fishing reserves.
This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for field experience, an adventure, or entering the field of conservation and/or sustainable development. Living at Honko, you will not only have the opportunity to explore the mangroves, but also to interact with and learn from the local communities – many of our volunteers say that is their favorite part of their Honko experience. You will spend most of your day in depths of the mangrove collecting data for this long-term research program, however while not in the forest, there will be many opportunities to explore the surrounding area (including kayaking!) and to assist with Honko’s other projects such as teaching English, mangrove planting, and many more.
