The hospital is situated just outside Stone Town, the historic centre of Zanzibar Town. It has a capacity of 510 beds for the admission of inpatients.
The wards and departments include: general medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, dentistry, urology, acupuncture and physiotherapy.
Electives and internships for students and apprentices of medicine, midwifery, nursing and physiotherapy are possible here. Graduates in the abovementioned fields can support the hospital as volunteers.
How can you get involved?
As a student of medicine, nursing, midwifery or physiotherapy, you can do an elective or internship at the hospital. You can either be in one department or rotate through multiple departments.
Interning at a hospital in Zanzibar is an exciting opportunity! You will get a profound insight into the treatment methods in a developing country and learn a lot about diseases and clinical pictures that you probably do not get so see very often in your home country.
A typical day at the hospital:
You will shadow and support the staff on your ward in their daily work. After a period of familiarization and orientation, you may (depending on previous knowledge) also perform minor treatments and activities under the supervision of the attending physicians, nurses or therapists, including wound care, measuring vital signs, vaccinations and other tasks. You will be assigned to a supervisor who will decide which examinations and treatments you are allowed to perform under his/her supervision. You will also attend the daily ward rounds in your department.
