Natural building in Kathmandu Valley

Guests from all over the world are welcome to learn our approach to natural building using recycled materials. This eco-building method was developed in 2010 as a solution to the outdated, environmentally unfriendly and weak (when it comes to earthquakes) building methods seen all around Nepal. We are pleased to have seen this technique adopted in many communities inside and outside of Kathmandu already. Most of our structures here at Kevin Rohan Memorial Eco Foundation are bottle buildings, and new ones are all the time under construction.

You don't need to have experience in engineering or building – all helping hands are welcomed since we believe that everyone has something to offer! Volunteers have the chance to share their ideas and suggest themselves on what work to focus on each day. We don't want you to get bored! You can also take part in and get to know our other projects; handicraft and jewelry workshop, biodynamic farming activities, eco-café or the creation of alternative and sustainable energy resources.

Usually we work 6 days a week from 10 to 17, with a lunch break in the middle. Evenings and Saturdays are freetime. However, the schedule is very flexible.

We offer our volunteers shared accommodation (2-3 beds per room) in our beautiful bottle buildings with wifi, hot shower and three traditional vegetarian Nepali meals a day. In exchange for this we ask 20$/day, or on stays longer than 4 weeks 15$/day.

Welcome to join the KRMEF family!

  • Natural building in Kathmandu Valley

Volunteer in an eco-building project, using glass bottles to build a better future! Our approach to architecture is to build with what is at hand. Building materials are all natural or recycled products that are locally available. Glass bottles, which would otherwise be disposed of in the streets, are recycled to serve as bricks which are both strong and decorative. As a result, these eco-buildings are much cheaper to construct, and follow a flexible structural system which will sway but is less likely to break during an earthquake. Come and join the work!
