Waitui Conservation is an exciting new marine conservation and coral reef monitoring program located on the beautiful island of Nananu-i-ra, off the northern coast of Viti Levu.
Volunteers can join Waitui Conservation with any level of diving experience, from absolute beginner upwards! The first two weeks are focused on completing the Science Training, educating volunteers in coral reef biology, ecology, threats and the status of global, regional and local reefs. Full training in the globally recognised Reef Check Eco Diver surveying methodology and marine identification will consist of both theory and practical sessions.
Waitui Conservation believes in ongoing learning and engagement and volunteers will have the opportunity to attend additional lectures, presentations and films to broaden their understanding of marine conservation and the marine environment.
Additional program components, including training in Project AWARE courses and PADI Distinctive Specialty courses are also available. Volunteers with Waitui Conservation will spend five days per week conducting Reef Check surveys or participating in another of our coral reef research and conservation initiatives. One day per week will focus on community and environmental activities, including visits to local schools, beach clean ups, and environmental awareness events, giving volunteers am opportunity to work alongside communities in the area.
Every week volunteers will have a much needed day off to enjoy the beautiful island of Nananu-i-ra, indulge in the many watersports on offer, including stand up paddle boarding, snorkelling, windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking and more!
