Volunteer For Sharks

We are dedicated to conducting ground-breaking research on the great white sharks and changing the public perception of this incredibly misunderstood species. We will encourage public participation in scientific research to raise awareness about not only the great white shark, but of all sharks, and to encourage people to become more invested in their conservation. We want to give many researchers who are in the early stages of their careers an opportunity to gain experience not only in the data collection and analysis, but also in conveying that information to the general public.

Volunteers will receive training and participate in presentations regarding:

  • The biology and behaviour of the great white shark
  • Skills in shark identification, observation and research methods
  • Basic seamanship
  • Shark attacks and statistics
  • Shark tourism and encounters
  • Basic environmental legal framework that regulates the industry
  • Local environment and climate and prevailing winds
  • Volunteers will provide hands on help and participate in:
  • Frequent trips to sea (weather permitting)
  • Preparing the tour and research boats and equipment
  • Eco-tourism
  • Shark spotting (above and below the water)
  • Shark observation, identification and data collection
  • Data analysis and input into an identification database
  • Shark cage diving
  • Community outreach and activities
  • Innovative ways to promote compliance with the shark tourism code of

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about the oceans, the environment and sharks to not only learn about them, but to also stay for 2 – 4 weeks or longer with other youngsters from all over the world.

Other Projects by this Organisation

  • Volunteer For Sharks

Volunteer for Sharks offers an intern programme where volunteers work with Shark Bay Research on their groundbreaking research about the impact of sound on Great White Sharks. They work closely with marine biologist Chris Perkins, and Kim, to collect, record and analyse data. They go to sea, learn to work with sharks, attend lectures, and participate in informative programmes where they learn about marine life, the ocean and sharks. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about the oceans, the environment and sharks.
