Volunteering in Sri Lanka – Protecting the Asian Elephant and Endangered Carnivores

Volunteering in Sri Lanka

As the residential areas on the island extend more and more, wild animals are progressively limited in their territories. Due to these overlapping habitats, animals like elephants tend to invade villages and cause major damages in crop and property. In the residents’ attempt to drive them out, animals suffer injuries on a regular basis that might even be fatal in some cases.

During your time in the project you will help to mitigate and resolve the Human-Wildlife/Elephant Conflict by assisting local scientists and experienced staff members in generating data about the local wildlife in direct and indirect field studies. Together you will gather information about animals like the endangered Asian Elephant, carnivores like leopards, sloth bears, civets and also about many others. Moreover also the habits of the animals as well as their natural territory and the tropic environment in general are topic of your research. Another very important part of the project is the dialogue with the population to develop conservation programmes together with the generated environmental data as well as additional socio-economic information. Moreover also the environmental education the project provides to the residents will be part of your voluntary work. By participating you will be a part of a sustainable project, gain deep insights in the local culture and get to know Sri Lanka’s unique nature up close.

Requirements, accommodation and food

In general there are no specific mandatory requirements besides a sufficient level of English skills for this project. You should be in a good physical shape as working in a tropical environment can be exhausting. Furthermore you should enjoy working outdoors in a team as well as independently.

During the project volunteers stay with the staff members in an open, rustic guesthouse that is situated upon a scenic hill with a stunning view over a lake and a mountain range. You are accommodated in one of five shared bedrooms in the house (each 2-3 persons) and will have access to three western-style bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room and also a lounge area.

Three meals will be prepared in the local style every day. The island is famous for its rice and curry dishes that are often vegetarian. Therefore egg, fish and soy are frequently used as protein source. During the day you can also drink water and Ceylon tea.
