Work on a small organic farm in its day-to day management and sustainable development

Organisation: Bubugo Conservation Trust

Country: Uganda

Type: Agriculture & Forestry, Environment & Wildlife Conservation, Humanitarian & Community Development, Manual work & Construction

By learning through doing, we are trialling and implementing sustianble land management practices on our farm, to serve as a working example to our local community. Implementing novel, yet simple and easily replicable approaches, we hope to demonstrate simple solutions to sustainable soil management. The volunteer would be expected to help with the ongoing activities on the farm, and with new ideas of approaches we could implement.

This is an unpaid position. The volunteer is expected to provide $200 per month to Bubugo Conservation Trust to cover accommodation and food. The volunteer is expected to cover all their travel and visa costs to Uganda.

Minimum duration of placement- one month

Located on the banks of the Nile on a white water freestyle wave known as Superhole, Bubugo Conservation Trust is perfectly placed to enjoy the might waters of the Nile, but also observe the impacts of poor land management decisions and the impacts of soil erosion and deforestation on the surrounding environment. We are developing a variety of projects to address this and the poverty within our community which drives these behaviours.

  • Work on a small organic farm in its day-to day management and sustainable development

We have a small organic farm on a couple of acres with some livestock and crops. We are looking for volunteers with on-farm experience to come and work with us to help with the day-to-day management of the farm, maintenance and development of new ideas of how we could improve and other things we could include. The long-term objective of our farm is to provide a demonstration of sustainable land management to our local community.

  • Developing market based solutions for sustainable incomes for rural women in Uganda

A one year volunteer position to establish access to market for the products made by women in our community in rural Uganda. We have a number of improved craft products made through structured women’s groups. We need to market and sell these products in a sustainable way. Ideas for market access include local tourism such as with a shop in the nearby town and export to Europe and elsewhere using online sales. We also need to further develop the range of good quality, original products made by the women which harness their talents and creative ideas.
