Join a team of passionate marine biologists and conservationists in the field and get hands-on experience working on marine research and conservation projects. Assist with scientific monitoring projects, citizen science initiatives and explore the kelp forests whilst on fish and shark surveys with the research team. Contribute to long term monitoring programmes of the Great African Seaforest.

Project Details

During your stay, you will participate in research projects monitoring the African kelp forests, shark and fish species of False Bay. You will also get involved with a wide range of other activities including community awareness and education campaigns, organising and assisting on beach cleans, local school visits, and microplastic sampling projects.

False Bay is nestled in an area of spectacular beauty that features stunning beaches, incredible marine life and a mountainous backdrop – just 40 km from Cape Town City centre. The coast of South Africa is a well-known hot spot for marine diversity, boasting numerous shark, cetacean and fish species as well as the cape fur seals and endemic African penguins.

False Bay is one of the most varied and diverse areas in the world for marine life and plays host to an abundance of species large and small, from an eclectic array of colourful nudibranchs, sponges and sea anemones to mega-fauna species including the Humpback whale, seven-gill sharks and of course the iconic white shark.

Being on the Cape Peninsula there are a whole host of activities right on your doorstep, also being just 40km from the City bowl of Cape Town there are numerous activities and tours to enjoy and explore. The house is also only 40km from the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek for wine tasting trips and spectacular scenery.
