Laos Volunteer in Laos

"The project is another example of dreams, visions, and action. The staff are all passionate and dedicated in their execution of having free and happy elephants who can be real elephants after years being chained."

Laos, often remarked as the forgotten country in southeast Asia, is slowly drawing people’s attention.  It combines stretches of tropical forest across mainly mountainous terrain with the contrasting chaos of the main towns’ bustling roads.  Its southern wetlands and small set of central plains are often set against the backdrop of towering mountains in spectacular fashion and it is easy to lose yourself in the crystal clear pools of Kuang Si Falls, south of the Luang Prabang province.  Did you know, Lao culture is centered on the pleasures of life?  They like to enjoy drinking, laughing and friendship.  ‘Muan’ means enjoyable but is also a state of being in the country.  With all the joy to experience both in the bustling towns and serene nature parks, if you are ever asked ‘Muan Baw?’ which roughly translates to ‘are you happy?’, you will most likely always say yes!

The old world charm of Luang Prabang, which is the province where our Elephant Volunteer Project in Laos is located, will capture your heart and leave you wanting to spend all your time amidst the beautiful landscapes that Laos has to offer.

Climate and Geography

A sliver of a nation, this southeast Asian state is characterised by two stretching borders on its east and its the west and a considerable amount of mountainous terrain.  It is the only landlocked country in the region.  The climate is dictated by the monsoon and experiences largely warm temperatures all year around.

History and Culture

Laos finds, and has always found, itself amidst a number of well known and powerful nations.  However, it too can trace its origins to one of the strongest kingdoms that governed in the regions for a number of centuries.  Unlike some other surrounding parts, its culture is significantly composed of Indian influences rather than Chinese.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

Like other parts of Asia, Laos struggles with severe wildlife trading, over-exploitation, poor development and unsustainable practices.  Yet, there is a beautiful array of wildlife and incredible displays of biodiversity still present in the country, particularly across the expanses of tropical forest.  Conservation efforts like our Elephant Volunteering Programme are present but in need of constant support.
