South Africa Volunteer in South Africa

"The environments were amazing, the Rangers are very kind and their knowledge unsurpassed. The organisation was perfect and the meals were delicious. We have learnt a lot and would like to continue volunteering in future."

Renata & Tamas, Hungary

South Africa is an incredibly beautiful country, and it’s not only South Africans who think so.  Various rankings consistently place it in the top 20 most beautiful places in the world and Cape Town, its legislative capital, has been named ‘the best city in the world’ by the Telegraph UK.  It’s not hard to see why as the country has a bit of the best of everything; diverse and vibrant cities bustling with energy, blissful white sand beaches and wide savannas teeming with wildlife (locally known as ‘the bush’).  At the southern tip of the African continent and bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, there is much to experience.

Volunteering in South Africa not only offers some of the most picturesque landscapes, it also doesn’t take long to feel at home.  It’s a place that opens its arms wide to any traveller looking to lend a hand and gain an experience.  In fact, you only need to know one thing: Ubuntu is a word that is at the centre of South African society, literally meaning, I am because we are.  It is this humanity and kindness that rests amid the scenery and makes the country somewhere you’ll find yourself leaving your heart.

Our Projects in South Africa

Climate and Geography

South Africa has one of the mildest climates and a considerable variety of landscapes to explore. The interior is much drier in general and cooler in the winter months while the coast offers lush and tropical vegetation and greater humidity. The breathtaking sites extend from the wide savannas inland to the mountains in the south-east and to both the Indian and Atlantic Ocean coastlines.

Culture and History

The diversity of culture in South Africa makes it a welcoming home to any traveller. Dubbed ‘The Rainbow Nation’, the people are friendly and eager to share their lives.  Historically, the country’s struggles against segregation, as well as icons like Nelson Mandela, are celebrated across the country. Near Johannesburg lies the Cradle of Humankind, where many human ancestors have been found.

Wildlife and Biodiversity

South Africa is famed for its wildlife – especially the Big Five.  The country is home to a number of endangered species like the rhino and riverine rabbit and is also the third most biologically diverse country in the world. Volunteering in South Africa enables you to discover and research a wide variety of animals from humpback whales to elephants and lions.
